Disaster Recovery for Medical Practices in Long Beach: When the Power Goes Out
A power cut, a flood, or a failed server can stop a practice cold. Here is how to build recovery that actually works when you need it most.
These terms get used interchangeably, but they answer different questions. Practices that confuse them lose time when it matters.

Business continuity and disaster recovery are related but distinct, and confusing them leaves gaps. Business continuity is the broader question: how does the practice keep seeing patients and operating when normal is disrupted? Disaster recovery is the technical subset: how do we get the systems and data back online? A practice can have excellent backups and still fail continuity because nobody knows how to schedule patients on paper.
A complete program covers both. The DR plan handles systems, with RTOs, backups, and failover. The BC plan handles operations, with downtime procedures for scheduling, charting, prescriptions, and patient communication, plus the roles and contacts that make them work. Test them together, because the technical recovery is only useful if the operational workflow is ready to use it.
When you treat them as one discipline, you avoid the classic failure of recovering systems fast while patients sit confused in the lobby. Continuity is about keeping care going. Recovery is about getting the tools back. You need both, planned and rehearsed as a pair. Our business continuity and disaster recovery service covers both.
Write a one-page downtime procedure for scheduling and charting, then rehearse it with front desk and clinical staff.
